GLP-1 is generally kidney-protective. Here's what to monitor and when to be cautious.
The data
GLP-1 medications have been shown to slow the progression of diabetic kidney disease. This is one of the strongest long-term benefits in diabetic patients.
Caveat: dehydration
Severe vomiting or diarrhoea on GLP-1 can cause acute kidney injury. Stay hydrated; report severe GI symptoms early.
Monitoring
We check serum creatinine + eGFR at baseline and every 6 months. If kidney function declines unexpectedly, we investigate and adjust.
